The Local Area

The Local Area

The area surrounding the theatre consists of mountains, hills, bogland, lakes, rivers, beaches, islands, cliffs and forests. Donegal is renowned for being one of the most beautiful counties in Ireland. A short distance from our base sits Glenveagh National Park, an area covering 110 square kilometres. The landscape has remained untouched by humans and hasn’t changed since the last ice-age, rich in flora and fauna and is the home to Irelands largest heard of wild Red Deer. The place is very popular with artists and photographers as the quality of light enhances color and serves as a visual great inspiration. Photographers find that they can get the same shot in twenty different light conditions in just one day! The natural springs flow with clean water. Visitors from mainland Europe who have difficulty sleeping find that they sleep like babies due to the clean air we enjoy here. Many rare plants and mosses thrive here due to these conditions, one of the cleanest, un-spoilt environments in Europe.

Thanks to Karl from the Errigal Hostel for allowing us to use some of his amazing photographs. He has lots more on his facebook page.
